This is typical of Henty's books, and one of the best.G. A. Henty was a prolific 19th Century writer, directing his work towards young men. His heroes are generally teenagers who combine humility with great courage, integrity and intelligence. They are, of course, just TOO perfect. Some criticize this, saying that the standards thus set are too high to be achieved. These critics (speaking of current times when all heroes, it seems, are to be degraded) forget that Henty intended to set high standards - not to be achieved necessarily but to be striven for. His books, I believe, help guide young men to become good men.
"With Cochrane the Dauntless" is the tale of a young teenager who puts to sea, first in a trading ship to the East Indies, and then to South America with Lord Cochrane. He has numerous exciting adventures, loosely woven around Lord Cochrane.
The true story of Cochrane is, itself, a great adventure. Cochrane had more adventures than could be put into a piece of fiction without being unbelievable. Horatio Hornblower and many other naval heroes of novels and movies are based on his true exploits. Cochrane attacked large ships from small boats, destroyed enemy fleets practically singlehandedly, led successful assaults on fortifications, escaped from prison in Malta, captured so many prizes as to become hated by the staid Admiralty, led the movement to improve the lot of British sailors, served in Parliament, and was an important liberator of Chile, Peru and Brazil.
This book is two parts the story of a boys adventures as he grows to manhood and one part a recapitulation of Cochrane's story. It is well written (although in the style of Henty's time) and, frankly, difficult to put down. I heartily recommend this, both to young adults, but also to we older folks who want to relive being young.

With Cochrane the Dauntless G a Henty 9781491026427 Books Reviews
A reasonable read. Good story line although I expected it to be about captain cochrane himself. Worth a look at.
Historically, this novel was reasonably accurate. A little double checking satisfied me that it was so. The jingo was a little stilted, but this is late 19th century literature. Otherwise, the story line and character development are just fine. Henty is obviously not a Conrad, Maugham, or Dickens, but whether you slot him in two or three pegs below those guys, or lower, even, he's still a decent read and for zero dollars. I've read my 4th Henty, and I'd say the same about each.

While the book is entitled With Cochrane the Dauntless there is very little time when the hero is ''with'' him. However the story gets exciting in some parts and in others you wish there was a skip button.
Great History, enjoyed every bit of it. Henty brings the life and times, as well as the military history, of Great Britain to the forefront in a way that keeps the reader interested.
Typical Henty fare.
A bit of interesting history wrapped in a darned good adventure yarn.
Perhaps a bit tame for modern readers, but I can well understand and appreciate Henty’s popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His formula of young men making their fortunes through hard work and service are no longer politically correct. Perhaps that is why I enjoy Henty so much even though it has been nearly half a century since I was a young man of the age Henty generally makes into his heroes.
I like G.A. Henty novels which are factual with a fictional character. Lots of schools in New Zealand don't teach modern history, so would appeal to the young adults with an interest in past events, that were responsible in making our world as we know it,today.
This is typical of Henty's books, and one of the best.
